Vintage hockey cards are among the most condition-sensitive in the hobby — and among the most rewarding for collectors who know what they’re looking for. The cards that consistently command serious money fall into a tight group: Wayne Gretzky’s 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie, Bobby Orr’s 1966-67 Topps and O-Pee-Chee rookies, Bobby Hull’s 1958-59 Topps rookie, Gordie Howe’s 1951-52 Parkhurst rookie, and Maurice Richard’s 1951-52 Parkhurst. These are the cards that define the category.

The condition challenge with pre-1980 hockey cards is significant. Canadian-issued O-Pee-Chee cards are notoriously difficult to find in high grade due to poor paper quality and rough handling during distribution. The Gretzky OPC rookie in particular has one of the most condition-sensitive populations of any post-war card — a PSA 9 is a genuinely rare object. The difference between a PSA 6 and a PSA 8 on most of these cards is not incremental — it can be five to ten times the price.
