Hello!

I have a question concerning the 1984-85 Star "base" set. The #172 Magic Johnson has a very low number of copies graded -- I think only 207 total by BGS and 113 by PSA (likely with plenty of BGS-to-PSA crossover in the past 2 years). This seems like a really low number for one of the game's Top 10 players. Is this card a short print?

I think the 1983 Star base Magic might be a short print, but I now wonder about the 1984 Magic given the low number of graded copies.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Hello - I have two quick questions (below) about the PSA holder and Star cards. I have an important Star card that is graded with a the 77xxxxxxx PSA serial number, meaning a new-ish PSA holder but not the newest version that debuted with (I think) 9xxxxxxx serial-numbered cards. (This newest holder may now be recalled, from what I've read.)

In any case, my card does not sit well in the PSA holder. It is off angle a bit. It seems secure -- and I certainly don't move it around -- but I would ideally like to reholder this card at some point -- (1) for visual appeal (no odd angles); and, more importantly, (2) just to be sure that the card is secure in the holder.

So here are my questions:

(1) From what I can see from looking at Star cards on various selling platforms, this seems to happen often with PSA-slabbed Star cards. They often don't seem to sit well in the holder. Were Star cards printed on thinner stock than most cards in the 1980s?

(2) Have others had success with reholdering Star cards with PSA? In other words, is it even worth it to pursue this option? I am lucky to live in NYC so could, in theory, attend 2025 Fanatics Fest or another in-person event in the future to get my card reholdered, but I wonder if it's even going to help.

Thanks in advance for offering your thoughts!

Hello - I'm wondering if you have information about PSA updates in relation to the Star sets they still don't grade. I'm specifically thinking about the 1985-86 base set (with the #117 MJ) as well as the Best of the Old/New and the full MJ set. Has PSA issued any statements updating with their plans for these sets?

I see that MJ Star prices are going up across the board. In an ideal world, it would be great to acquire PSA-graded copies from these sets. So I wonder whether PSA grading (of these sets) may be on the horizon. If not, I think focusing on BGS-graded slabs would of course be the next best thing. It's just that PSA carries a value premium and they have the refund guarantee with graded counterfeit copies and that adds some security. So it seems safer to go with PSA if possible.

Any updates about these sets and PSA would be appreciated. But maybe the update is, There is no new news!

Thanks for considering the question regardless!

Best,

I have a bunch of awesome looking baseball, basketball cards that have 1990/91 dates. I did read that they printed baseball cards without authorization in the early '90s. Although I did luck out and get a few 85/ 86 cards for basketball that are legit. Inherited cards. Thank you. Sherry

Hello,

I have found your Star Basketball Cards website to be very helpful. Many thanks for all the work you have put into it!

I've been studying the information for the past year or so and I'm slowly starting to dip my toes into the world of Star basketball collecting. I'm considering some particular cards, but I have a couple concerns, which I'll share here.

(1) I'm interested in the key 1983 rookie cards -- Drexler, Isiah, and Dominique. I may lean toward PSA-graded copies, but I'm also open to BGS, if I feel very confident about the particular graded card. Here's an example I've been looking at -- I noticed that this BGS 9 1983 Drexler has left-hand white border bleed over the red on the left, whereas one doesn't see that on this PSA-graded copy. I would assume the BGS copy is still authentic -- given that Star had plenty of printing issues and so some variance with border bleed (or lack thereof) would be expected. But I wonder what you think about this white border bleed on some of the '83 cards. It's hard to find authentication information about the '83 set.

(2) I'm very interested in the second-year base Jordan -- 1985-86 Star 117 MJ. It's a beautiful card. I know PSA isn't grading this set yet and your authentication page has been invaluable with viewing copies of this card. This BGS 9 copy does seem to check out -- in terms of the main things to look for with counterfeits of this card. But the image does seem overly dark -- i.e., the reds of the border as well as the Jordan photo. My guess is that's just related to the contrast of the photo taken (of the card) by the seller. Compared to this BGS 9.5, for instance, with a slightly lighter red / MJ image. My assumption is both are authenticate, but I wonder if you've seen highly sophisticated fakes of this card (that have darker printing). If so, I guess I'd be more wary.

In any case, thanks for considering my questions. One is general -- i.e., do some of the 1983 base set cards (esp. the Drexler) have white border bleed on the left-hand side (a la that BGS Drexler I sighted above). The other question -- about the 1985-86 Star 117 MJ -- is more particular to the copies I've looked at.

Overall, I'm just extra careful with BGS-graded cards. I know BGS was at the vanguard of Star Basketball grading, but I also collect soccer cards and there have been some major issues with BGS-graded fake stickers. Plus, PSA has the guarantee (with counterfeits) that provides extra security.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can offer!
