Julius Erving’s 1972 Topps #195 is one of the most important basketball cards ever printed — and one of the most condition-sensitive. The 1972-73 Topps set is notorious for poor centering, which is why high-grade examples are genuinely scarce. There is only one PSA 10 in existence, and there are no comparable sales to price it against — if it ever came to auction the result would almost certainly be record-shattering.

PSA 9 copies have averaged between $20,000 and $22,000 at auction. Below that, PSA 5–6 examples trade in the $1,500–$4,000 range, and PSA 8 copies have recently sold around $2,880 — up meaningfully from where this page was written. Entry-level copies in PSA 3–4 can still be found in the $300–$1,000 range, making this a card where collectors at almost any budget can participate.

The centering issue is worth understanding before you buy. Finding a well-centered Erving is significantly harder than finding the card itself — centering is the primary factor preventing most examples from achieving PSA 9 or 10. If you’re buying raw, centering should be the first thing you evaluate.
