The sealed boxes that matter fall into a narrow window: pre-1988 issues where the potential contents justify the premium over buying singles outright. A sealed 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee wax box — the set containing Gretzky’s rookie — is the crown jewel of the category. Beyond that, 1966-67 Topps, 1970-71 OPC, and early 1980s OPC boxes with Gretzky, Bossy, and Lafleur content drive most of the serious collector interest.
