The 2026 Prospect Card Boom: Who’s Overheated and Who Still Has Room

Our latest piece on All Vintage Cards takes a close look at where the prospect market stands right now — and honestly, some of it is getting a little frothy. The frenzy around rookie cards and Bowman Chrome autos is starting to feel a lot like the peak of the COVID-era card boom.

Konnor Griffin’s 1st Bowman Chrome Auto is now selling for $1,700–$2,000 in a PSA 10 grade, up from $300 ungraded just a few months ago. Kevin McGonigle has more than doubled since November. J.J. Wetherholt is over $600 graded. At these levels, Vinnie’s view is that the upside is largely priced in for the top-tier names — but there are still some reasonable entry points further down the list.

Frank Thomas “No Name on Front” Sets New Record

A PSA 10 copy of the 1990 Topps Frank Thomas “No Name on Front” rookie card sold for $183,000 at Heritage Auctions on March 2nd — a new all-time high for the card. According to PSA’s population report, there is only one PSA 10 example in existence, and the same card previously sold for $170,400 in December 2022. The story is a nice illustration of how a printing mistake created unintentional scarcity in the middle of the most overproduced era in card history. The printing error inadvertently created scarcity within a mass-produced Junk Wax set and became one of the very first chase cards of that era.

Rare 1909 Ramly Cards Surface from an Old Cigar Box

Sports Collectors Daily has a fascinating piece this week about rare 1909 Ramly tobacco cards discovered in an old cigar box, centered on Doug Smith — a Red Sox pitcher whose story touches on baseball’s hidden color line.
