The October Pre-War Sports Card Vintage Auction from The Collector Connection is officially live—and it’s packed with hobby favorites, hidden gems, and tough-to-find cardboard from the pre world war II era of sports.

I was most excited about the over 500 T206 Cards listed at auction, including several affordable Ty Cobb, Cy Young and a whole host of other stars and commons.

The auction ends October 19th, so now’s the time to build your watchlist or move on to that next great pickup.

1. 1909 E92 Nadja Caramels Honus Wagner Batting SGC 3

najda caramels wagner

This is one of those rare Wagner cards most people aren’t familiar with. Of course we all know the famed T206 Holy Grail Honus Wagner, but this card was issued right around the same time as the T206 set. According to the Collector Connection, “PSA has graded two 3’s and none higher. This is the only SGC 3 with one SGC 4 higher”

From a condition standpoint, its not perfect but for a card of its age, tough to find one this clean. It is off center top to bottom and a has a sligh slight tilt to the image with moderate to heavier corner wear but crease free with only minor soiling to the back. Great color and image make this a pretty stellar “3”.

2. Allen & Ginter Complete Album

A companion to the amazing Allen & Ginter N28 set is the 1st Series album, itself highly prized and quite valuable. Measuring 6″ x 8″, the album carries the A.C.C. designation of A16.

Name(Required)

According to the Collector Connection, these are often broken up and sold as pages but this is a near complete album — intact and complete!

Some staining in the upper right of the cover and minor corner creasing in the bottom right along with light soiling. Ward and Dempsey are both clean and almost untouched by wear. Inside cover has light soiling.

This is a great 19th century piece for any baseball card collector.

3. 1911 T3 Turkey Red Christy Mathewson Checklist Back HOF SGC 2

I’m a huge fan of the T3 Turkey Reds set and for those not familiar these cards are oversized–5 3/4″ x 8″-and are hard to describe the beauty until you actually hold one in your hand. Christy Mathewson’s card is one of the big names in the set and this copy is in pretty nice shape, graded an SGC 2 or good, with a very nice presentable front. The Collector Connection says “the grade is absolutely spot on, but it’s still an incredibly desirable copy”.

4. 1934 R310 Butterfinger Lou Gehrig HOF PSA 1 POOR

This is a really unique piece and these don’t come up for sale often. I’ll let the Collector Connection describe the signifcance of this piece:

“We’ve always been of the opinon that the grades on issues like Butterfinger are of dubious importance. This has us firmly convinced we are right. While I guess you add up a host of tiny faults on such a large and fragile piece to get to the POOR designation, simply put this is a fantastic example. Creasing in the top corners heavier on the right but all 4 come to nice points. There are a few short light creases elsewhere the heaviest being down from the top edge towards the word “sports” on the signage but it doesn’t even make it all the way through the border. Now like almost all of these there are numerous “finger bends” which are distortions in the paper caused by handling but no actual creasing. Basically they look like minor local warping, but they have almost no visual impact unless you are interested in how your premium looks from the edge. There are no tack holes, tape, writing or even soiling that are so common to these. It’s just a phenomenal example of an issue they are brutally tough on.”

5. 1915 Cracker Jack Eddie Plank

The Cracker Jack sets from 1914 and 1915 are one of the most prized and sought after sets in the hobby.

This Eddie Plank card from the 1915 Cracker Jack set is one of my favorites. Just a great look to this card with the red background and the stare of the amazing HOFer Plank just settling into the background.

Light tobacco caramel staining to the front, more stains on the back but they aren’t terribly heavy and don’t affect legibility at all. Significantly OC left to right with light to moderate corner wear including a light crease in the lower right

Good luck bidding. Please note that The Collector Connection (like most other auction houses) charges a 17.5% buyer’s premium to all winning bids.
